What's Up Wednesday

What's Up Wednesday is a nifty little blog hop, over at Jaime's blog.

What I'm Reading

A few months ago I took part in World Book Night.  This night celebrates everything to do with, well, books!  The lovely organisers at World Book Night put together a list of great books, which people can give away for free.  I chose to give away The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fford at an event hosted by Lowestoft Library.  At the event, other 'givers' were giving away different books.  I picked up The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness because it looked like something I could enjoy.  It has been sitting on my shelf for a couple of months, but I decided to finally pick it up last week and start reading it.  So far, I'm really enjoying it.

What I'm Writing

My WIP is plodding along quite nicely.  At the moment I'm only managing to find time to write on Sundays.  At my last word count I was up to 44,000 words, which is half a novel, so I really need to get a shimmy on! I'm happy with what I've written so far, but I stepped out of my normal writing routine with this one.  I usually write a complete story from beginning to end, and then edit.  But this time I've written the beginning and the end, and have to go back to fill in the gaps.  I just hope I can make them match!

What Inspires Me Right Now

I think work is inspiring me at the moment.  Working in a library and being around all those lovely books really gives me the urge to get on and write so that I can share the shelves with those great authors.

What Else I've Been Up To

This week has mainly consisted of me working (which I still love), organising the Lowestoft Library Literary Festival (which will be taking place on Saturday 28th September), and going to Book Group.

Oh, and I also set myself up a website ...

  1. 44000 words is still impressive, even if it isn't a full novel! Good luck in finding time to write the rest :)

    1. Silly me, I spelled my name wrong on the website link! Ha! It should be working ok now. My last novel was 120,000 words, so I'd like this one to match it if I can get it that high.

    1. Thank you. I have a moderation thing set up on my blog so I can see all messages before they get published (to make sure I don't get stupid 'anonymous' messages).

  5. The Knife of Never Letting Go is one of my favourite books ever. It's so amazing. Todd is an amazing character.

44000 is amazing! Congratulations and good luck with the rest of your writing.

    1. Thank you :) I am really enjoying the book. I've only got up to the bit where Todd meets the girl after he's told to leave the town. I really want to find out what happens.

  7. 44k is pretty much a full novel for me! I am always envious of those who churn out 80/90/100k drafts, because I always feel like my stories are blink-and-you-miss-it short. I agree with you about libraries giving you inspiration--I spend most of my time at work surreptitiously reading and working out where my books would be on the shelves :)

    1. There are some amazing long books and some amazing short books. And at the same time, there are some terrible books of all lengths. I think as long as you successfully get your story out, it shouldn't matter how many words you use to do it :)

  8. 44000 words is awesome. Depending on genre, it can be closer to the end than others. I write fantasy, so mine ended up longer then I initially thought it would be. World-building. I love the library. My son and I go every week for new books.

    1. Thank you :) I like to be between 80 and 100 thousand, so that when I edit I can cut out chunks and it doesn't really reduce the size of the book too much.

  9. 44K sounds like some great progress! And you get to work in a library? Ahh, how fun! That's so neat that you're surrounded by such inspiration. Hope you have a good writing week!
